Identity

CLO is a local and not for profit organization made up of Jesus followers and those committed to language development.

Background

While Khmer is the official language of Cambodia, the 2018 national census identified 22 additional languages spoken across the country, several of which are at risk of language shift or extinction. With over fifteen years of experience in the field of linguistics, I am deeply committed to contributing to the preservation and development of these languages, recognizing the urgent need to safeguard and revitalize them.

The Cambodia Linguistics Organization (CLO) was founded to address several critical needs identified within Cambodia's language communities. One of the primary needs was linguistics training. By providing Cambodians with training in linguistics principles, we empower members of language communities to read, write, and conduct research in their own languages.

Another critical need is the development of language technology. To ensure the preservation of these languages, they must be compatible with modern technology. CLO is dedicated to ensuring that all languages in Cambodia are developed sufficiently to be used across all available computer applications.

Additionally, CLO identified the need for language development products, including dictionaries and literacy materials. These resources are essential for both research and educational purposes.

In response to these needs, CLO has outlined two primary focus areas: linguistics training and language development. Our linguistic training program includes specialized courses in topic-based linguistics, translation principles, and the use of language technology tools. In parallel, our language development initiatives encompass research, the creation of language technology tools, and the development of educational materials, such as dictionaries.

Through partnerships with local and international stakeholders and relevant government agencies, CLO is dedicated to equipping language communities with the resources and training necessary to achieve their language development goals. By doing so, we aim to ensure the sustainability and inclusion of Cambodia's diverse languages for generations to come.
